Top-up fees
Top-up fees (or 'top ups') are additional payments made by a person or a third party in England when someone in local-authority-funded care chooses accommodation more expensive than the authority would normally pay for, where this is judged affordable.

Local authorities decide whether someone can afford a top-up and should not be left having to pay it themselves if there is a reasonable expectation it will become unaffordable over the person's expected care journey.
