Top-up fees
Top-up fees (or 'top ups') are additional payments made by a person or a third party in England when someone in local-authority-funded care chooses

accommodation more expensive than the authority would normally pay for, where this is judged affordable. They do not count towards the cap on lifetime care costs. Local authorities decide whether someone can afford a top-up and should not be left having to pay it themselves if there is a reasonable expectation it will become unaffordable over the person's expected care journey.
