Self-funder

A self-funder in England is someone not entitled to council help with care costs because their savings exceed the upper capital limit (£23,250) or, for a care home move, because they own property.

Self-funders can request a free needs assessment to establish what care is required, and may ask the council to arrange care and bill them, though not all councils offer this. Options to cover care-home costs without selling a home include equity release, renting out the property, or a council deferred payment scheme, repaid later from the estate.
