Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) cover more complex skills needed for independent living, such as managing finances and medication, preparing food, housekeeping and using transport. Clinicians use standardised checklists, including the Katz Index and the Lawton IADL Scale, to assess ability, and the results commonly inform eligibility for assistance programmes and decisions about care home admission.
